December 2003. To: The Residents of
Lucan. Re: Breaking News on Weston Aerodrome.
Dear Resident, I am sure you are aware of my
work in the interest of the proper planning and development of Lucan. In
particular I refer to my vigorous efforts to support local Residents
Associations and Community Groups who have objected to the proposed expansions
and developments at Weston Aerodrome. I am delighted to report that today An
Bord Pleanála notified me of its decision to REFUSE PLANNING PERMISSION
for that part of the Weston Aerodrome proprietor's proposals to extend and
develop Weston Aerodrome, which was previously Granted Planning Permission by
South Dublin County Council. Whilst other proposed works to upgrade existing
structures at the Aerodrome were granted planning permission, specifically the
demolition of existing hangers and construction of a new larger hanger, office
and clubhouse, car parking spaces, aircraft parking and new vehicular access
off the R403 Regional Road (Celbridge Road), this effectively allows for the
upgrading of existing structures at this location with a new access route. The
following quote from An Bord Pleanála today in its First Schedule of its
decision represents a major significant victory for the local community in
Lucan and justifies the position I have taken as your Local Independent
Councillor on this issue during the past number of years: "It is considered
that the development of Hangers A-E and associated car parking would constitute
a greatly expanded development resulting in a significant intensification of
use of Weston aerodrome which would be inconsistent with the existing use and
character of the aerodrome. The Board is not satisfied, on the basis of the
submissions made in connection with the planning application and the appeal,
that such intensification of use would not seriously injure the amenities of
the area or of property in the vicinity. The development of Hangers A-E would,
therefore, contravene the zoning provisions for the area - to preserve a green
belt between development areas - and would be contrary to the proper planning
and development of the area." Please be assured of my continued work on your
behalf.
Yours
sincerely, Cllr. Derek Keating MCC, PC
